Reduce Your Screen Dependence While Still Enjoying Your Favorite Media

Blog

There's nothing wrong with enjoying television and the internet, as long as you're happy with your quality of life. If you feel you're developing a screen addiction, there are steps you can take to fight it. However, you don't have to go cold turkey. Here are four tips you can use to become less dependent on screens while still enjoying your favorite TV shows and media:

1. Only watch your favorite shows.

There are two types of television shows: the ones you truly enjoy and the ones you watch out of boredom. The first step in reducing your screen dependence is cutting out boredom-induced watching behaviors. Sit down and make a list of your favorite TV shows. Once you're done making a list, make a resolution to only watch those shows. It makes no sense to watch television shows you don't even like in order to kill time. You'll find that you suddenly have a lot of additional free time to fill with activities you truly enjoy.

2. Sign up for video streaming services.

Video streaming services have become all the rage in recent years. They give you the opportunity to watch TV shows and movies whenever you want. This frees up your schedule because you can watch things on your own time. Many video streaming services are inexpensive, so you can easily try it to see if you like it.

3. Utilize a digital video recorder.

Of course, not all television shows are available through streaming services. Many current shows are only available on major television networks, which means you'll have to catch them on TV or wait until the season is released on DVD. Fortunately, there's another option: you can use a digital video recorder to capture your favorite TV shows. A DVR fulfills much the same function as a VCR but without the need to fuss with a videotape. You can program your DVR to capture your favorite shows, then watch them at your leisure.

4. Schedule screen-free times.

In part, your reliance on screen-based forms of entertainment may be out of habit. When you're bored, you reach for the television remote or your laptop, which trains your brain to seek that form of stimulation. You can break this vicious cycle by scheduling screen-free time each day. You can get the whole family in on it; this is a great way to spend more time together and encourage family bonding. If you find that the temptation to break screen-free time is too great, there are programs you can install that will block your favorite channels or websites during certain times of the day.

Making The Choice Between Internet Service Providers

As a young single mom, the world is constantly filled with new challenges. When we moved into the place where we are now, I had to figure out how to lift heavy furniture all by myself and set up a myriad of service providers and utilities. Although it probably shouldn't have been hard, one of my greatest challenges was figuring out who to work with to get the Internet. At first, they all seemed the same, but after a little more research, I was able to track down the company I felt comfortable with. I want to make life easier for my fellow single mommas, which is why this blog is dedicated to helping you to choose contractors, service providers, and companies to work with.
